Regulation 2019/1781
EU Energy Efficiency Standards for Electric Motors

In accordance with Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781, new efficiency standards for electric motors have been phased in across the European Union, with significant implications for the design, manufacture, and selection of compliant motors.

As of July 1st, 2021:

  • All three-phase electric motors from 0.75 kW to 1000 kW, at 2, 4, 6, and 8 poles, must meet minimum IE3 efficiency levels.

  • Motors from 0.12 kW to 0.55 kW must comply with minimum IE2 efficiency.

  • These rules apply even to motors used with variable speed drives, brake motors, and ATEX motors (except ATEX Ex eb and all single-phase motors, which are excluded at this stage).

As of July 1st, 2023:

  • All ATEX Ex eb explosion-proof motors from 0.12 kW to 1000 kW, and all single-phase motors from 0.12 kW, must now comply with IE2 efficiency.

  • In addition, three-phase motors from 75 kW to 200 kW, at 2, 4, or 6 poles, must comply with IE4 efficiency levels, except for brake motors and ATEX Ex be motors.

These regulations are part of the EU’s broader efforts to reduce energy consumption and drive sustainable industrial practices across member states.

At Valiadis S.A., we are fully prepared to guide our clients through these regulatory changes. Our product lines are compliant, our support team is informed, and we are committed to ensuring fast and accurate service during this transition.

Reflections on Europort 2019 — Special Ships, Smart Solutions

This week we returned from Europort 2019 in Rotterdam — one of the world’s most important gatherings for the maritime and offshore sectors. Under the theme “Special Ships, Smart Solutions”, the fair was packed with energy, innovation, and opportunities.

What Made This Year Special

  • Strong thematic focus on smart technology, renewables, green shipping, and evolving operational efficiency. Europort 2019 included a wide range of conferences and masterclasses around topics like marine solutions for offshore renewable energy, digitalization, vessel propulsion, ship-port integration, and short-sea shipping optimization.

  • Young professionals & talent streams were a clear priority. Events like the YoungEuroport programme, student pitches, CareerLab, and networking for emerging maritime specialists gave the show much more than just displays — they gave it a sense of future.

  • Greek participation was particularly strong this year via Hemexpo, with Valiadis among the companies represented — a chance to highlight what we do, meet partners, and see how “smart solutions” are being deployed across the sector.

Reflections & Takeaways

Participating in Europort 2019 reminded us why it matters: steady advances in maritime tech are no longer distant goals, but practical necessities. Whether it’s greener ship designs, smarter propulsion systems, or advances in vessel equipment, the marketplace is moving fast.

We were glad to share our innovations, our experience, and our perspective with visitors and exhibitors from across the globe. Events like this reaffirm our commitment: to deliver solutions that are not only reliable, but forward-looking.

Authorized Euromotori Explosion‑Proof Repair Shop

We are proud to announce that, as of May 31, 2019, we have become an authorized repair shop for Euromotori Explosion‑Proof motors — specifically for the MAK, LEX, and LEN series. Having served as their agent for nearly 30 years, this new status reflects our commitment to meeting the highest safety and technical standards in hazardous environments.

To earn this authorization, our team completed specialized training in Italy, mastering the procedures required for repairs on Explosion‑Proof motors. These include strict protocols for handling flame‑proof housings (Ex d / Ex de), ensuring correct insulation and sealing, verifying temperature classes, and conforming to ATEX (and related) directives. The MAK series ranges into flameproof enclosures rated for gas/dust zones with classifications like Ex d / II B e II C etc.; the LEX and LEN series are built for zones and protections under dust‑ and gas‑hazard norms.

What this means for our customers: when you trust us with repair of Euromotori MAK, LEX, or LEN motors, you receive work done under certified methods. The repairs are fully compliant with Euromotori’s technical requirements, ensuring safety, reliability, and performance in even the most demanding industrial settings.

Becoming an authorized service center for these explosion‑proof motors strengthens our portfolio in special‑motors and underlines our dedication to quality. It’s one more way we ensure that your equipment operates safely and lasts longer.

Load Test

Load Test

Load Test with Coupled Machines — Thessaloniki Facility

At our premises in Thessaloniki, we recently performed a full load test using two identical electric motors, mechanically coupled to simulate real operating conditions.

This testing method — often referred to as back-to-back testing — allows us to evaluate the performance, thermal behavior, vibration response, and mechanical balance of the tested unit with high accuracy and full control over load parameters.

The setup involved:

  • Two matched machines, operating as motor and generator

  • Controlled load conditions, monitored throughout the test

  • Real-time data acquisition, including current, voltage, torque, temperature, and vibration

This procedure is used to confirm both the quality of the motor under test and the robustness of its application-specific configuration, especially in demanding industrial environments. The test helps us verify alignment, cooling performance, mechanical integrity, and the response under sustained load — long before the motor is ever installed on-site.

Tests like these are a key part of our commitment to ensuring trouble-free commissioning and maximum reliability in the field.
