Reverse Engineering – KHV355 MV Motor

July 5, 2020

Another reverse engineering project has been successfully completed, adding one more example to our portfolio of special-purpose electric motors developed for demanding industrial applications.

The project involved the manufacture of a KHV355 medium-voltage motor, delivering 339 kW at 6 poles, built in B3 horizontal mounting, 6.6 kV / 50 Hz, with a service factor of 1.15.

Technical Data

  • Type: KHV355
  • Power: 339 kW
  • Poles: 6
  • Voltage: 6.6 kV
  • Frequency: 50 Hz
  • Mounting: B3
  • Service factor: 1.15

Compact Frame, High Output

One of the defining characteristics of this project is the combination of a relatively compact frame size with high power output.

Designs of this type demand careful optimization of the magnetic circuit, insulation system, cooling performance, and mechanical construction. As power density increases, maintaining thermal performance and long-term reliability becomes an increasingly important engineering consideration.

Projects of this nature illustrate the close relationship between electrical design and mechanical execution, particularly where an existing installation must be matched through reverse engineering.

Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering begins with the existing machine rather than a catalogue.

Dimensions, electrical characteristics, mechanical interfaces, and operating conditions must all be evaluated before a replacement motor can be designed. The objective is not simply to reproduce a motor, but to provide a machine that integrates correctly with the customer’s installation while meeting today’s manufacturing and testing standards.

Type Tested

Following manufacturing, the motor successfully completed its full type tests, confirming compliance with the required electrical and mechanical performance before shipment.

Each reverse engineering project presents its own requirements. Whether the challenge lies in power density, voltage level, mechanical configuration, or installation constraints, the objective remains the same: delivering a reliable replacement engineered around the customer’s application.
