Reverse Engineering – KHV500 MV

July 18, 2020

Another reverse engineering project has been successfully completed, adding one more special medium-voltage motor to our portfolio of custom-engineered solutions.

The project involved the manufacture of a KHV500-6 motor, rated at 315 kW, 6 poles, 6.6 kV, in B3 horizontal mounting, with IC411 cooling and a service factor of 1.15.

The motor was developed to match the requirements of an existing installation, where both the electrical characteristics and the mechanical configuration had to be carefully reproduced.

Technical Data

  • Type: KHV500-6
  • Power: 315 kW
  • Poles: 6
  • Voltage: 6.6 kV
  • Mounting: B3
  • Cooling: IC411
  • Service factor: 1.15

Large Frame, Custom Mechanical Design

One of the defining characteristics of this project was the combination of a large frame size with a relatively moderate power rating.

The motor was manufactured with a fabricated steel frame, while its extra-tall feet were designed specifically to match the dimensions of the existing installation.

Projects of this type require careful consideration of the complete mechanical arrangement. Mounting height, shaft position, support geometry, and structural rigidity all become part of the engineering process, together with the electrical design of the motor itself.

Reverse Engineering

Every reverse engineering project starts with the existing machine and the installation in which it operates.

Electrical characteristics, mounting dimensions, shaft height, cooling arrangement, and mechanical interfaces are evaluated together before manufacturing begins. The objective is to produce a replacement motor that integrates naturally into the application while complying with current manufacturing and testing standards.

Because every installation has its own characteristics, reverse engineering projects frequently involve custom frame construction and non-standard mechanical details, tailored to the requirements of the customer.

Designed, Manufactured and Tested

Following completion of the design and manufacturing stages, the motor successfully passed the required testing procedures before shipment.

Projects like this demonstrate the close relationship between electrical engineering and mechanical design. Performance, structural construction, dimensional accuracy, and installation requirements all contribute to the successful operation of the finished machine.
